ESSAY-writing competitions are usually aimed at students, but now Chinese-literate teachers have the opportunity to show off their composition skills in the 2009 Chinese School Teachers Essay-Writing Award competition.
Organised by the Education Ministry, the Secondary Schools Chinese Language Panel Club and Malayan Press, the competition is open to all teachers, including lecturers and those who have retired.
Participants can submit narrative or descriptive essays based on their own experiences written in Chinese. The length of the essay should be about 2,000 to 4,000 characters, which includes punctuation.
There are 20 prizes to be awarded, with two top prizes of RM1,000 each, three runner-up prizes of RM500 each and 15 consolation prizes of RM300 each.
In addition, the winners will receive a certificate and five books, while the top five winners will also receive a trophy each.
The competition was launched recently by Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong at SJKC Jalan Davidson, Kuala Lumpur.
In his speech, Dr Wee said that the competition would encourage teachers to think and read more, which will help sharpen their writing skills and increase their general knowledge.
It would also enhance their communications skills, particularly in terms of sharing their teaching experiences, methods and philosophies with other people.
“Nowadays, it is important for teachers to enhance their skills in order to encourage their students to follow suit.
“If teachers write good essays, it will encourage their students (to do the same),” he said.
Dr Wee added that he was glad to see teachers using blogs to interact with their peers and students. The closing date for the competition is June 30, and the results will be announced on Aug 8.
